Yves released her second EP [I Did]. Appearing exactly like the title track, like a viola that looks fragile but blooms straight up.

1. [RSK] We did an interview for your debut EP [LOOP] in May after your solo debut, and a self-Q&A interview for your single <Tik Tok> in September, but it’s the first time we’ve done a pictorial and video interview together. How was your time with us today?

It was meaningful because it was my first solo pictorial shoot for Rolling Stone Korea. The atmosphere on the set was so good. Because of that, I had so much fun and was grateful while shooting!

2. [RSK] How does Yves’ day go? And I’m also wondering what your favourite time of the day is.

If you try your best to do what you’re given with no regrets, in no time, it’ll be time to get off work. I think I’m happiest when I get off work.

3. [RSK] What about when you’re not promoting? I’m also curious about what keywords are in place, not in the singer Yves’, but in human Ha Sooyoung’s day.

Bed, oversleeping, short-form [videos], horror radio, “Midnight Horror Story”, “Getcha Ghost”, “Saturday Mystery Theatre”, and “Unanswered Questions”

4. [RSK] Shall we talk about your new EP as well? Your second EP [I Did] was released six months after [LOOP], right? What kind of process did it go through?

I wanted to end this year successfully by releasing another album within it, not just announcing the beginning of my solo career with [LOOP]. I talked to the company in many ways, and as a result, I released an album called [I Did] that allows me to more firmly promote my colour while attempting new genres.

5. [RSK] The new album contains the emotions you faced while searching for peace. What did you face on your journey of finding peace?

As Schopenhauer once said, you only know happiness is happiness, when there is unhappiness. I now understand that in order to be truly peaceful, there must also be anxiety. When an uneasy situation comes, I don’t want to just avoid it. I feel like I can affirm and face all of me, even my unstable feelings.

6. [RSK] What does the title track <Viola> mean? I’m curious about why a song in which you sing, “I need my space,” is titled Viola and what it means.

The title of the song, <Viola>, means a viola flower. When the song was completed and its title was not decided yet, CEO Millic was thinking about the title and said that the viola suddenly came to mind as an image reminiscent of me. A viola means “think of me” in the language of flowers. I named it as such because it seemed to go well with Yves’ heart for her fans and with the lyrics.

7. [RSK] What’s the one song that you were particularly drawn to?

The song I was particularly drawn to is <Hashtag>. When I first heard the guide, I was worried because it sounded so hard, but the result was better than I thought. There’s also a behind-the-scenes story where I edited it to make it sound better; I said to IOAH, “Wouldn’t it be good to swap the second and the first verses?” and swapped them.

8. [RSK] I heard you wanted to make this EP a scene, not a song. If you could pick a movie that’s similar to this EP, which one comes to mind?

If you think about it from the point of view of the person singing the song... I like the movie “Josee, the Tiger and the Fish”, but at the end of the movie, there is a scene where Josee is left alone and grills mackerel forlornly. I think that comes to mind first because I thought it was similar to the scene when I was recording the lyrics of “Viola”, “from behind my collapsed stage, look at me, desensitised.”

9. [RSK] Apart from the album, your favourite movies and books, music, games... I’d also like to hear some stories about your taste.

I like movies like “All About Lily Chou-Chou”, “Monster” and “Moonlit Winter”, because I like the soundtracks embedded in movies more. I also listen to the soundtracks often. As for books, I used to like poetry collections, but these days, I try to read psychological and self-improvement books, and as for games, I don’t like aggressive and violent ones, so I like ones with a calm and peaceful style, like “Animal Crossing”.

10. [RSK] What message penetrates [I Did], does Yves think?

A rainbow after the rain.

11. [RSK] What were your thoughts after completing your first solo promotions for [LOOP]?

I made a difficult decision and chose a difficult path, but I want to praise myself for starting. Like anyone else, it is inevitable that regardless of the outcome, there will be disappointment, but thanks to the support from the fans, I thought many times about wanting to do better in the future.

12. [RSK] Among the countless things you’ve wanted to do, what are some of the things you achieved as a soloist this year, and what are some you haven’t achieved yet?

What I achieved was that I really wanted to have a fan song as a solo artist, and I was so happy that an artist named blah told my story and completed it as a great song and gifted it to me. What I want to achieve in the future is that I want to compose my own songs like the fans want me to and to show you a more artist-like side.

13. [RSK] As you completed your solo debut successfully this year, I think it will be a special feeling to wrap up this year.

That's right. There’s a feature on my phone called “one year ago today” that shows me past photos, and it makes me sad even now because it looks like I was going through much hardship at that time. But at the same time, I’m doing something that I never thought of at that time, so I’m grateful for every moment and have a little more positive thoughts about not having to worry too far in the future.

14. [RSK] [LOOP], [I Did], and what do you want to show next as Yves?

I’m also looking forward to and am curious about it. There are so many things I want to do and so many things I like that I’m expanding my spectrum every day and my tastes are constantly changing. I’m curious about the colours I’ll be in by the time my next album comes out and what kind of music I’ll be making. I’ll be spending every day looking forward to it.

15. [RSK] What’s musician Yves’ ultimate goal?

The definition of a musician is to become a person who is not ashamed.

16. [RSK] It’s already the last question. I read that you talked about your fans in a recent interview, saying, “They liked it because it was an Yves-like choice.” What do you think Yves is like?

I can’t see myself completely objectively in my daily life, but when fans say it’s an Yves-like choice, I subjectively think that to be Yves-like is to be “scared, but still have the courage to choose an adventure, and to eventually do what you set out to do."

Yves’ various pictorial images and the full interview will be available in Rolling Stone Korea Vol. 13, to be published later.
