The song I'll talk about today is "Rosy" by Olivia Hye, a member of Loona
This is the song that got me involved with the Loona girls, and it's a very special song for me
And in my mind Hyeju really seems to resemble a rose petal
So maybe for that reason, I think she really fit well with "Rosy" and its odd and dreamy atmosphere
So let me get into this post about the song :)
<Rosy> Intro.
"Rosy" must have been one of those songs that were the quickest to finish for me When I first heard the track I felt a lot of dreamy and pretty and pensive vibes Just the sensibility that I like! Flipping through a word book while pondering what title might fit the track, the word "Rosy" caught my eye It might seem like a mundane title but it was visually a bit more aesthetic and distinctive than "rose", and more than anything, I felt confident I could work out the contents well! As always, I couldn't afford much time while being chased by deadlines so I recall going "euahhhh-!!!" and there it was finished ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
When I came to the lyrics were completed, and the reactions were more explosive than I thought ㅇㅅㅇ;;; The label was also very favorable towards it, and so as I said earlier this song was what helped me to keep working with the Loona girls And according to composer oppa, he said this song significantly influenced the construction of Loona's lore I don't know if he told me that just so I could feel good (ㅋㅋㅋㅋ) But it does feel like I got to play a part in the lore //ㅅ//embarrassed
Writing Process
First, this isn't just a dreamy and pretty song all the way through Actually if you peer into the lyrics, the sense of a little pain and darkness is much stronger And I wrote in that frame of mind too But I couldn't go too dark so I think I found a moderate spot So I think that made for an even more odd-feeling set of lyrics My favorite style of songs are bright yet a little moody, a bit nostalgic I write a lot of upbeat songs but I don't actually listen to a lot of those, and I don't really like crooning ballads either ㅋㅋ I think I enjoy the odd emotion right in between :)
Lyrics Interpretation
The overall story is that I compared a woman to a "flower", and people get drunk on her beauty and try possess her and pluck her Isn't it a little sad when you hear it that way? It's the story of a rose that's lonely because it's beautiful
Like a flower, bloomed in thick darkness I stand here, shaking a little precariously
I thought of a dizzying yet solitary and lonely rose, like these From the get-go it says it bloomed "in thick darkness" I imagined a single flower that had bloomed all pretty at the edge of a cliff and swaying at the mercy of the winds, a sorrowful rose in that kind of precariousness was what I tried to convey
Drunk with the scent, you try to snap me Eyes wide open, staring at me
Towards the solitary rose, already hurt many times before, approaches yet another person The rose thinks, you're like all the others, you're just taken by how I look on the outside "Eyes wide open, staring at me" To me expressions like this feel a little scary too Looking at others, who are faking love but actually just drunk on the rose's beauty and only trying to possess it, I wonder how the rose feels?
I'm sure you want me (I'm sure you want me) But don't get pricked (don't get pricked) Carefully baby (carefully baby) It won't be that easy I'm just getting started (getting started)
I'm sure you want me, she says, but come at me very carefully, so I won't prick you with these wounded thorns I like the way she says "It won't be that easy" too Because I think it reveals the rose's personality, alluring yet prim

The verse was expressing an inner darkness, pushing away the other, whereas in the chorus I wrote out a risque atmosphere I liked being alone with all my hurts but wait, I guess I don't hate it when you come near me? What is this nervousness? is the rose's confused monologue She's saying, "You're gonna be drawn to me more out of curiosity I know everything. You'll fall deeper for me" :)
Biting the reddened rose petal on your lips Feel this moment melting in My breath trembles at your soft smile Now be at ease and slowly reach out your hands
The other person approaches the rose slowly, softly resting the lips over the rose petal At that moment, the rose's past wounds appear and awaken its memories and emotions This person doesn't become afraid or fearful of the rose, and instead genuinely understands how the rose feels Their tension starts to ease, and she asks them to reach out her hands :)
I find you wandering around in the thorny bush People want to box up and possess things that sparkle
I did the rap lyrics on this part as well. Probably took about 10 minutes Because I was just got so into it ㅇㅅㅇ.. This part is related to the rose's past memories "People want to box up and possess things that sparkle" sounds a bit sad to me too The wounded rose builds an artificial bush of thorns to protect herself, and so that no one could approach her easily But even so, people hear word that the most beautiful rose in the world lives here and even as they get lost and bleed in the thorn bush, their will to pluck that rose is undeterred
The night deepens, hurry Run from me before you're lost Let me be risque At the end of this night we bloom
When the night falls, dangerous thorn bushes will come out of the rose to protect herself, like a habit So she says hurry and run from me, before you get hurt, before you get lost But the other person says I know all of your wounds, so it's okay, I don't care if I get a little hurt For the first time, the rose has met someone who doens't just want to possess her beauty, but truthfully loves her for who she is In that way, the two people bloom beautifully into genuine love
I think I like the tone of things like "hurry, run from me" because of how fatal it feels ㅋㅋㅋ I like that part a lot because I think it helps to make the song feel more fun and fresh! (Lyricist pride ahem)
So "Rosy" is actually the story of a rose who has a wounded and dark past Was it similar to your interpretation? The theme of "solitary and lonely because of beauty" was attractive to me It might be the darkest and saddest theme I've written to date. But it was so much fun to work on!
