[The Devil’s Plan] Season 2! Netflix has it all planned? PD Jung Jong-yeon’s Brain Survival Reality [The Devil’s Plan] Season 2, [The Devil’s Plan: Death Room] coming soon! Producer Jung Jong-yeon's brain survival reality , which has drawn attention since Season 1, is returning with Season 2 . Four of the 14 survival contestants, Yoon So-hee, Chuu, Jung Hyun-gyu, and Choi Hyun-joon, reunited after a fierce brain battle lasting seven days and six nights. In mathematics you can bite and chew until you find the solution to that problem, but ‘survival brain games’ are different in that you need to find the most ideal answer within a limited time. I was most drawn to that aspect.” As for the most cutthroat moment in the game, Yoon So-hee recounted, “We all tried our best to survive, so there were a few cutthroat moments. I did think, ‘It’s just a game, do we really have to go this far?’” Chuu said with a smile, "In this season, spaces were divided into the prison block and the living space block. Several people were imprisoned at once in the prison block, and they were in conflict with the living space block. So everyone is on guard and in competition, both between individuals and between teams. I was so scared. (Laughs) I wanted to show that I wasn’t a pushover, even if I might not be someone to fear, but I don’t know if it worked.” Choi Hyun-joon said, “All of us who appeared on “The Devil’s Plan 2” basically had a guarantee of exoneration. Our task in that place was to compete in the toughest and most private way. Chuu, the emotions that flowed and the memories that stayed Chuu’s walk in the tracks of a solo artist is precious in itself. A girl who was thought of as only cute; all the emotions and memories of her growth process have been completed into an album that is so honest and calm and yet bolder than ever. Q. I wonder what emotions and motivations drove your creation of the new mini-album “Only cry in the rain”. I wanted this album to be about the journey of youth, facing “memory” and “emotion” and walking onwards again. In at least one point in our lives, we all have certain emotions that we hesitate to bring out, right? As I re-opened those emotions one by one, I realised little by little that these eventually made me who I am now. So in this album, I wanted to show you another side of me, my lyrical inner side and the growth of my musical world, in a little quieter yet deeper way. I put that intent into all five tracks. Q. The keywords “things that flow and things that stay” run throughout the album. It’s quite a philosophical approach. Could you explain how you chose this topic and interpreted it in your own style? “Things that flow and things that stay” was a sentence that stuck in my mind ever since I started working on this album. You know, youth is a period in which everything seems to go by quickly, but strangely, there are emotions that remain in your heart for a long time. I wanted to talk about the things that lie in the space between flowing and staying. For example, memories I thought were gone suddenly come to mind on a rainy day, and the emotions that have already passed bloom again through a scene or music. So I made the entire album so that emotions flow naturally like water, and I tried to find balance in a way that each lyric or vocal tone was not lingering too long, but also wasn’t too light. In the hope that my emotions and voice can be the “something that stays” with someone even among the “things that flow”. Q. The entire album deals with a side of youth that you can’t help but feel anxious about. Personally, which moment were you the most emotionally immersed in while making the album? I think I was most emotionally immersed when shooting the music video. I’m not the type to bring out sadness on purpose. Rather, I tend to look at the things I need to do right away first, so I just let the emotions of the moment flow by. However, in this shoot, I had to intentionally draw out the emotion of “despair”, but it wasn’t as difficult as I thought, so I surprised myself. As if I had been waiting for it, the stream of emotions that flowed like water were unfamiliar, but strangely I didn’t hate it. The crying was not “sorrow”, but rather a moment when the feelings I had been suppressing hard came out at last. It’s become a memory of becoming a little more honest with myself and being comforted by that. Q. You have tried many things as a solo artist and achieved many things. As a musician who succeeded as a solo artist, what is the meaning of this album? For me, this album was “the period in which I looked at myself truly kindly for the first time”. There were many new challenges that I hadn’t attempted as a solo artist yet, and there were moments when I was scared and lonely, but after those times passed, I was able to be honest with my feelings. “Only Cry in the Rain” was a time in which I went beyond just making music, when I slowly brought out my present self and what I felt, refined them and made them into a world. So this album is a record of my growth, a comfort to myself more than anyone else, and a moment that made me feel, “Now I can really tell my story.” Q. The music video for the title song was in a drama format and you acted in it yourself. Could you share any anecdotes from the production process? The music video was in a drama format, but it was also my first time filming with an actual film camera. Since it was filmed in 16mm film, it wasn’t easy to call “cut” during the filming. So each emotion and each movement felt much more serious and precious. I’m used to digital filming, so it scared me a little at first that I could only check how a scene came out after it was developed. I couldn’t immediately check how the scene turned out, so I had to immerse myself in that moment and bring out real emotions. Especially when shooting the scenes in which I was crying or when I was alone by the sea, I remember forgetting that the camera was running and really falling into those emotions. And later, when I watched the film-printed scenes, I was very surprised that the soft, textured screen reflected the emotions of that day even more realistically. In that sense, I think this work was not just “acting” but rather a time to record my emotions directly on film. Q. The title song, which has the same title as the album, “Only cry in the rain”, will definitely be a song you’ll think of on a rainy day. Are there any special songs or memories that come to mind when you think of rain? Since I was a kid, I used to play with water on rainy days. I would go out in my boots and plop around without much care for dirtying all my clothes in the muddy water, I think. Q. “Back in town” is about unfamiliar yet familiar feelings, “Kiss a kitty” has the brightest and most lovely atmosphere in the album, and “Je t’aime” is a dreamy love song - each track has its own unique characteristics. Could you explain the direction of your music in this album? I think it’s most accurate to explain that this album expresses the grains of my emotions in various temperatures. “Back in Town” is about the fluttering emotions of a first love coming to mind in a strange city. And just like the moment your emotions become tender, “Kiss a Kitty” has a playful and lovely vibe, so it’s like a space to breathe in the album. With repeated confessions layering on top of the dreamy guitar sound, I wanted to show how deep and long love lasts in “Je t’aime”. “No More Apologies” is about embracing my emotions as they are, rather than continuing to meet others’ standards. Each song is different, but it’s all in the same flow. In that flow, I tried to be honest about how my emotions change and how I accept them. So while this album talks about “emotion”, it’s a much freer album in terms of genre. Q. When you look back on the whole album process, what was the most challenging part or the part that you worried about the most until the end? “No More Apologies” was the song that I struggled over the most. Actually, this song was almost included in the previous album, but I was a little disappointed when I recorded it, so I put it on hold. But while preparing for this album, I listened to it again and after revising it with a new perspective, it was completed in its current form. I listened to it so much that my ears couldn’t tell whether it was good or disappointing anymore, but I put much love and consideration into it, so I really hope the fans will like it this time. In a way, this song is like my “small act of courage”. Q. Was there any part that personally healed or comforted you while making the album, and what would you most like to convey to your listeners through the album? I was healed a lot myself, while making it. We typically tend to hide or put off our emotions, don’t we? But during this production, I was able to take those emotions out one by one and face them honestly. Especially while singing the title track “Only Cry in the Rain”, I think I’ve come to understand my own feelings a bit better, thinking to myself, “Oh, I too once wanted to cry like this”. So I wanted to tell my listeners through this album, “It’s okay not to hide your emotions.” That everyone has those moments, and you can be honest on a rainy day. Q. The message, “Even if your memories become blurry, your emotions remain,” leaves a deep aftertaste. What emotions are unforgettable to you? I still can’t forget the moment I stood on stage when I first debuted. My heart was racing like it was going to explode, and I was out of breath, but that moment felt so ecstatic that I thought, “It’s okay even if my whole body shatters right now.” That feeling hasn’t faded over time, and even when I take it out again now, it’s a moment where my heart starts to race and I get emotional. I think I’d probably feel the same way if I go back to that time again. It’s such a precious and nostalgic memory for me. Q. Why did you so badly want to tell youthful people, “It’s not the end just because it disappears”? In life, things that were precious naturally become blurred one day, and some emotions drift away for no reason. In those times, we feel that “it’s over,” but the emotions don’t disappear; they remain quietly somewhere, and then suddenly they come back to us at some unexpected moment. I had that experience, and when I brought it back out in music, I found that such an emotion was still alive in me. So I wanted to tell someone else, too. Chuu shared her thoughts: “I’ve been on tour and shooting a drama. I spent 10 months having a variety of meaningful experiences including traveling. Because of it, I’ve grown more and feel better. I’m looking forward to showing you a better side of me.” She also shared how she felt nervous, saying, “However, I was so nervous ahead of the album’s release that I couldn’t sleep properly. When I had interviews for ‘Strawberry Rush’, I was so nervous but after doing it, it was fun and I felt warm, and I thought I could do well the next time. But I couldn’t sleep again this time. I’m very attached to this album, so thinking about how I want everyone to enjoy listening to it and feeling excited and nervous all had me tossing and turning and unable to sleep well.” In the 10 months of preparing for the new album, Chuu said that her attitude toward music has grown the most. “I used to look at the melody or atmosphere first when listening to a song. On the other hand, in this album, maybe because it’s about emotions, I thought more deeply about the message of the album and focused on it. I thought first about what kind of message I want to convey and what kind of feelings I wanted the fans to have while listening to this song. Seeing myself like that, I thought that my attitude and mindset toward singing have changed a lot. Instead of thinking about singing technically well and looking pretty on the outside, my desire to convey well the message I wanted to convey became a priority. I was reminded of the meaning of music again, and I felt the precious value of music again. I think my mindset toward music has broadened.” On the reason why “emotion” was chosen as the album’s concept, Chuu explained, “I usually think deeply about emotions, so I wanted to put those things into the album. My emotions swirled and changed countless times as I prepared for the album too, and I think it will be fun for listeners of this album to compare these with their own various emotions.” Chuu said, “I sang about emotions during ‘Howl’ too, but this time it’s a little different. As its name suggests, ‘Howl’ is the starting point of venting the emotions that had accumulated in myself for the first time, while ‘Only cry in the rain’ is an album that shows the maturity of being able to preserve and store your emotions and take them back out when you want, and being able to control your emotions. In that sense, I hope busy modern people who don’t know their own feelings and might let them pass by would also be able to empathise, if only for a little while.” Chuu shared that she also had a lot of things to empathise with while preparing for this album, saying, “I was always a bright person until I turned 25 years old. I always felt good, and even when I was in a bad mood, I always let it slide as if to cover it up. I didn’t want to look into my inner calmness, to the extent that I didn’t even look up and watch sentimental movies. At one point, I thought, ‘Does a calm or emotional part of me not exist?’ However, just as my name has the word for rain (Woo), at some point, many things happened as if it were raining down a storm, and I found that I also had an emotional part in me. Recently, I watched ‘When Life Gives You Tangerines’ because I wanted to cry on purpose. While preparing for this album, I came to rethink how to relieve my emotions.” The album consists of five songs including the title track of the same name, “Only cry in the rain”, that tell the story of the journey of facing the unseen things called “memory” and “emotion” and moving onward again. “Only cry in the rain” begins with the imagination that the “rainy day” is the one and only time and place where one can lay bare their emotions. One only carefully examines emotions on a rainy day, then once the rain stops, youths must live their lives as if nothing happened; the song warmly illustrates this collective life. Chuu introduced “Only cry in the rain”, saying, “I think everyone goes through periods where they hide their emotions and continue living. Emotions aren’t something you can easily put down just because you’re tired, you’re angry, or you’re sad, right? It’s also not something you can easily take out when you want to take it out, so I thought it was something I could take out when I’m in my own place or when I can concentrate. I hoped this song could be such an instrument. As soon as I heard this song, I wanted to say that you can take out your emotions.” Why did she use “rain” as the medium, out of all the possible subject matter? Chuu revealed, “I thought that human emotions are like the rain, because you don’t know when it will rain. It might end up being a brief shower, or a storm that stays for a long time, or a rain cloud that only darkens the sky, isn’t that right? I compared the uncontrollability of it to emotions. I thought that they’re like the rain in that I can’t do any particular thing to solve it, that I can’t do anything about it myself.” In that sense, Chuu emphasised that even if “Only cry in the rain” is about the rain, it is not a gloomy song. She replied maturely, “I think rain and tears don’t always remain sad or dark. Didn’t I also have many difficulties before the descriptors ‘vitamin’ and ‘sunshine’ were attached to me? I think I only got to have a clear sky after experiencing and feeling many things, so I don’t think the rain necessarily symbolises depression and drooping. In some ways, you can have hope, thinking of the clear sky after it rains, so I think you will feel different emotions whenever you listen to ‘Only cry in the rain’. I hope it’ll be a warm song that can comfort someone having a hard time, giving them hope to stand back up after something. This image related to ‘rain’ is one of the images I also want to take with me, like ‘vitamin’ and ‘sunshine’ that I already possess.” In addition, the new release will be accompanied by “Back in town”, which depicts the emotions of a distant first love, “Kiss a kitty”, where you can encounter Chuu’s sweet tone and soft singing rap, “Je t’aime”, a soft love confession, and “No more”, which is about the desire to not apologise to others and love your cherished self more. Every time I listen to it, I get a different feeling. Sometimes it feels like a girl who shyly confesses her feelings, and sometimes it feels sad and resentful over a lost love. In that sense, I think it would be good to focus on the lyrics.” The most memorable lyrics are in “No more”, she hinted. “There’s a line, ‘it starts now, be happy’. I think that anyone can relate to it and feel it when they listen to it even once. It’s not easy to recover when you lose your self-esteem, so I wanted to send that message of support with my own voice,” she said. Finally, to introduce “Only cry in the rain” in one word, Chuu said that the album is like “sky blue”, adding, “The sky before it rains, the gloomy sky when it rains, and the clear sky after it rains are all classified as ‘sky blue’, right? [Original article] After one year and eight months, the ruling of the first trial regarding the exclusive contracts of LOONA’s Haseul, Yeojin, Yves, Go Won, and Olivia Hye with their previous agency is set to be announced. On the morning of the 17th, the first trial verdict to confirm the invalidity of exclusive contracts per a lawsuit filed by Haseul, Yeojin, Yves, Go Won, and Olivia Hye against Blockberry Creative will be delivered at the Seoul Northern District Court. Earlier, nine LOONA members (excluding Vivi and Hyunjin) petitioned for a provisional injunction against Blockberry Creative, determining that “the relationship of mutual trust with Blockberry Creative - the foundation of a contract relationship - had collapsed to the point that expecting management work or activities in the entertainment sector had become difficult.” Heejin, Kim Lip, Jinsoul, and Choerry won this provisional injunction, but Haseul, Yeojin, Yves, Go Won, and Olivia Hye lost their case in January 2023 due to previously having made some changes to the terms of their contracts. In turn, Haseul, Yeojin, Yves, Go Won, and Olivia Hye appealed in June 2023 and subsequently were granted the provisional injunction. In August they filed a lawsuit to invalidate their exclusive contracts, and this case has continued to this date. I think building Legos is one of the most fun playtime activities you can do by yourself at home.
