Yves reacts to public affection with solo debut and promises to come to Brazil In an interview with Quem, the singer opened up about her new phase as a solo artist and the release of the ‘Loop’ EP By Lívia Maria Yves has made a name for herself among K-pop lovers since she made her solo debut in March this year with the Loop EP. The singer, who began her career as part of the iconic group Loona (2016-2023), surprised fans with a unique style of musical concept and rhythm and gave an interview to Quem to talk more about the start of her new journey. “Loop is an album that honestly expresses the desire to disconnect and break the endless cycle of everyday life and our invariable relationships. In these four songs on my first album, I recorded my emotions at the moment and what I wanted to say,” said the artist. Yves also pointed out that her songs are like an open diary and an invitation to her fans to understand her feelings. OFF INTERVIEW: HeeJin celebrates new solo phase and support from LOONA members Giu Bressani HeeJin is more than confident about her fresh start. The 23-year-old South Korean singer recently released her solo album “K”, accompanied by the title track “Algorithm”, which marks the beginning of an important new phase. At the age of 16, she was the first member of the group LOONA to be revealed with the song “ViViD” and now, seven years later, she can showcase her full potential as a soloist. Today, she is also part of the ARTMS project alongside fellow LOONA members JinSoul, Kim Lip, Choerry, and HaSeul. Following the album’s release, HeeJin talked to OFF about her new phase, the most memorable - and difficult - moments of her career so far, and her dream of visiting Brazil one day. OFF: Please tell us a little about the concept of your album HeeJin : My new album is called ‘K’, which stands for Korea. I was nicknamed ‘Dangun’ (founder of the first Korean kingdom) for being the first member of LOONA, and I’m showcasing the traditional Korean beauty and attraction with the letter ‘K’. K-pop has become a genre recognized all over the world, and this album includes all the elements that represent it. OFF: It’s been said that your album is ‘charming in a uniquely Korean way.’ What are some of South Korea’s charms that you would like to share with the world? HJ : K-Pop, K-movies, and K-dramas have become popular all over the world. So I’d like fans from other countries to be able to experience other elements of traditional Korean beauty, which I believe is unparalleled.” OFF: What message would you like to convey with this release? HJ : The lyrics of Algorithm are about an old love that keeps popping up in your thoughts, like an algorithm. And just like the title of the song, I hope your algorithms show me to you all the time! OFF: The MV for ‘Algorithm’ shows a princess who dreams of becoming a big star. How do you personally relate to this character? Was it inspired by your personal experiences? The South Korean singer, a former member of the K-pop group LOONA, has released her first solo EP, “LOOP”. The title symbolizes a break from the cycle of patterns she followed before her solo career. “It’s an opportunity to focus and explore my creative side. With this album, I had the chance to talk about what I wanted to say and the stories I wanted to share,” explains Yves in an interview with Billboard Brazil. “LOOP” expresses the anguish and frustration we feel when we are trapped in the continuous cycles of life. In “Diorama”, Yves describes the most intimate emotions she feels when confronting her idealized self. “Afterglow” explores the conflicting feelings of being caught between a new love and a familiar one. The final track, “금붕어 (Goldfish)”, is a message of comfort Yves wishes to send to the fans who have supported her and watched her grow over the years. “Sometimes I dream about the melody. I wake up, write it down, and get to work. I like to have the base first and then think about the motif,” she says. “I feel I’m at a stage in my career where I can choose the songs that suit my abilities. The CEO [of the record label Paix Per Mil] gives me a lot of freedom.” Yves says she puts a lot of pressure on herself to show her best on stage. “The reason I’m hard on myself is because I love myself so much. I know I can always do better, and I maintain a high standard,” she explains. To find the balance she needs to withstand the internal and industry demands, the singer meditates. “I light incense or a candle. I put on calmer music. If I have more time, I visit a temple. This helps me to relieve stress and get away from these pressures,” she details. Growing up in a group Yves, whose real name is Ha Soo Young, made her K-pop debut in 2016 and was a leader of LOONA. The group broke up last year, and the members split off into solo projects. “Even if I could go back in time, I wouldn’t do anything differently. I truly believe that I made the best decisions and did the best. That’s why I got to where I am and who I am today,” says the singer. “I learned a lot about how to make decisions, and at the same time, listen to the different opinions of the members. I’m proud of how I grew and how much more determined I am now. With the girls, I learned a lot about love. We learned to accept each other and listen to each other. No one is perfect. Heejin: We filmed our group choreography on dry ice during MV filming. Haseul: In our group chat, when any one of us appears to be struggling or tired, everybody puts love into her. I think we’re so cool for being able to tell each other things like ‘You are the best, the prettiest’, ‘I love all of us’ without reservation. Kim Lip: I was hiding behind Heejin in the MV’s rooftop scene, but my full volume of hair still couldn’t hide its presence! I think it will be a gift to listeners.” The process of chasing a trophy that she encounters by coincidence, breaking out of a repetitive routine, and rediscovering the dreams and imaginations that were once dear as a child is intended to continue the lore of Howl. Chuu explained: “I felt like the intro sound effect of “Howl” and the one in this album sounded similar. And there is this monster friend that appeared in “Howl”’s music video. In “Howl”, that friend held my hand and guided the identity that I didn’t want to reveal to the world, and gave me confidence to shout to the world. In this album, the picture is about coming out to the world through the monster friend and flying towards my goals. The monster helps to tie the lore together, and I think this drew out the most nearby identity among my many identities. In the music video, Chuu acts out an energetic superhero who dashes at the speed of light as she clears missions among aliens. Chuu said, “I was floating in the air with this new contraption. I’ve been wanting to do a wire scene, and the filming was so much fun because we were able to film those vibrant shots just like my personality.” She was expectant, saying: “We filmed in many spots, so I think we’re gonna get a lot of scenes that suit the vibe of Australia and the lore.” Other than the title, Chuu also recommended side track “Honeybee”. Chuu said: “This is a relaxed voice tone that even fans haven’t heard a lot of, so I really pulled the power out of it. It sounded different when I listened, unlike when I was monitoring while singing it, so it felt new like ‘Oh, so I can relax like this as I sing.’ It was a challenge of a tone for me, too. This was my first tour alone so I was really nervous and tense, but the American fans greeted me so brightly that I never even felt tired while performing. We may have different languages and ways of thought, but I felt how we were communicating. It was a moment to remember for a long time.” Asked whether it wasn’t difficult on her stamina to move into tour and comeback preparations after the Howl activities, Chuu explained: “I don’t like to rest, so I was already wanting to release the next album even during the U.S. tour. Before the Strawberry Rush preparations I was consistently getting vocal lessons to firm up my tone, and I worked to show some more growth by getting various dance lessons. And I kept up exercise during the inactive period so that I could prepare health-wise.” Chuu’s goal is for “Strawberry Rush” to be part of the daily routines of many. She emphasized: “I earned my license through Chuu Can Do It, and I found myself making on-the-road playlists. “Strawberry Rush” has a fast tempo and it feels like racing towards something, so it has this sensation of clearing something obstructed. There will be lots of time to listen, but if people listen during congested commutes to work or back home, while working out, or while showering, I wonder if it might release tension.” Expressing a desire to be on stage often and establish her color as a singer through “Strawberry Rush”, Chuu specifically compared her color to the gaenari forsythia. She passed along: “I like the color yellow. There’s something special about the energy I get while looking at yellow. To people who hear my music or see me often, I want to be someone who’s like a vitamin.” Part 2 Chuu has always shown a bright demeanor through a multitude of variety shows, and she is full of positivity even in her daily life. Asked what she’s like when alone, Chuu replied, “It’s not often that no one is around, but my energy or way of thinking is always similar. I’m a simple person. I’m sad about the misunderstanding that ‘I bet that girl isn’t like that when she’s home’, but it’s nothing to feel that bad about.” Chuu did not make a distinction between the singer Chuu and the person Kim Jiwoo. She replied, “A lot of people told me that I need to separate the Chuu on TV and the Kim Jiwoo at home so that things won’t be tough for me. But I think Kim Jiwoo just comes out the way she is through Chuu, so I don’t think it’s much different.” Chuu says that she’s been wanting to show off her different voices through a solo album, and she has put in painstaking work to overcome a singing slump. Last November on a certain Web variety, Chuu confessed: “I went on this radio representing the members, and I thought all I had to do was have fun and I sang, but it became a live vocal controversy. I got really depressed and avoided people. After that, I got so nervous any time I had to sing. So much that my legs would shake. I think I got into a slump about singing. I still get so nervous when I’m on stage, and my breath begins to lift when I sing. I’m working hard because I believe I need to establish a firm confidence as a vocalist, and do it on my own, if I’m going to show good things to fans and not leave any regrets on the stage.” Chuu says that she recharges her energy through various hobbies. “I have so many hobbies. Before the album preparations I was working on myself through my hobbies, and I went on a trip with friends for the first time too, and I realized there’s a certain energy you get from travelling with friends. I think the new things I try in life give me a lot of motivation and vitality. I play tennis and badminton, ride the bike, take walks and run along the Han River. I give myself vitality through these different hobbies and that’s where I get motivation that lets me work.” Appearing in last December’s broadcast of ENA’s music variety Hit Song in My Ear, Chuu expressed thanks to Sunmi, who she met on Running Girls, for giving her generous advice and encouragement. [Original Article] [Star News Reporter Yoon Sang-geun] Former members of girl group LOONA Jeon Heejin, Kim Lip (Kim Jungeun), Jeong Jinsol, and Choerry (Choi Yerim) have won their exclusive contract lawsuit against their previous agency Blockberry Creative (henceforth Blockberry). On the decision date, the 11th Civil Suits Division (Na) of the Seoul North District Court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in the civil suit filed by Jeon Heejin, Kim Lip, Jeong Jinsol, and Choerry against Blockberry to confirm the nonexistence of exclusive contract effect valued around 200 million won. This lawsuit was filed with the court in March 2023, and the decision date was initially set without any hearings due to Blockberry’s lack of response. However, the company submitted a late response, and the first hearings began in December 2023. Hearings were concluded after two additional occurrences. These members had already won injunctions in a lawsuit to suspend the exclusive contract’s effect, freeing them from any limitations on entertainment activities. These four members all made a new home at Modhaus alongside the lawsuit filing and debuted as the girl group ARTMS, heralding a new beginning. ARTMS was reformed as a five-member group including these four members plus Haseul who also promoted as a LOONA member. Firstly, we would like to explain the situation regarding Knowmerce selling its shares in CTD E&M. We are a startup that began proper operations in June 2023. As many fans are aware, releasing an album requires a great deal of investment and effort. Since last year, the company has been conducting investor relations rounds in order to secure a better environment and quality content production. We held meetings with numerous investors, and among them, Ktown4u, the # 1 global fandom-based e-commerce platform in the country, has partnered with us as a shareholder. Further, we have secured a more stable environment for the company’s future activities through strategic operational partnerships. Second, regarding the boy group project. We are an entertainment company that does business by developing or recruiting artists and using music-related intellectual property. Like most entertainment companies in this country, we are discovering new artists and preparing them for debut. Many companies, like ourselves, are constantly conducting auditions to secure talent. And within the fierce competition in the entertainment market, it is not possible to operate a company with a single girl group. As such we are focusing on Loossemble as our girl group, while preparing a boy group as a new IP. For us, Loossemble is like cherished treasure, having had a difficult path to come together. There will never be a time when the boy group causes Loossemble activities to be interrupted or harmed. The number one priority and the focus of all of our abilities and business is Loossemble. She says that this process isn’t a smooth one, but that makes it more enjoyable. 1. You’re having your solo debut after 6 years and 6 months, right? It must be especially moving, coming back after so long. First, I’d like to hear your thoughts on returning solo after being in a group. If I felt fearful because everything felt new to me in 2017 when I was in the group and released my solo project single, in 2024 now, I’m calm and also excitedly nervous. I’m nervous of course, but I want to hurry and be onstage. 2. (As of the day of the interview) There’s around a week until your solo debut, how do you feel? It hasn’t really hit me yet. “Am I really debuting? Is this the start?” These question marks keep pouring out, so I think I need to feel it with my own skin while performing onstage for the first time on the day of the showcase. 3. We learned in March that you had signed with PAIX PER MIL in November. It’s been around half a year since. How has life been in your new home? When birds build their nest at first, they also pick out branches to move one by one, to try and get comfortable. PAIX PER MIL now, in May, has become a comfortable nest for me. Though it was unfamiliar and difficult at first, the company staff gave me a lot of help. 4. A lot has changed around you, hasn’t it? What’s the biggest change you’ve felt? How the loud, feel-good decibels have disappeared and gone silent? When I was with the members we would chat and joke around all day, but having more time to myself now, I think I’m having more thoughts as well. 5. I imagine there could be a big difference between Yves as a girl group member, and Yves as a solo singer. That could include your attitude or mindset as you face the stage. What do you think is the biggest difference between the two? If as a girl group member my mindset was “let’s make up for each others’ weaknesses”, now, as I have to fill the stage on my own, I think my sense of responsibility has become much greater. It makes me look at myself more objectively, and notice my points of weakness even more, so I’ve practiced more, but I don’t dislike this process. It’s fun. 6. You mentioned “beyond being an idol, as an artist, expanding your musical spectrum as an artist”, right? What do you think fills the world of Yves, not as LOONA, but as a solo artist? I want to honestly log my emotions and things I want to say, moment by moment. What that will become is like the unknown in an equation, so I’m very curious, and looking forward to that. In a year from now, two years from now, how will my colors be painted? It’s fun, like a room of secrets. 7. And you’re preparing a fan showcase as well? Are preparations going well? I’m calmly controlling my mind to not feel rushed, and am working hard on preparations! 8. What kind of album is your solo EP, [LOOP]? It’s an album that expresses the desire to break the endless cycle of daily life that’s unchanging, breaking out of the repeating loop and running away, through songs in various genres. 9. While preparing your new album, which part did you put the most effort into? Telling my story. Of course, my debut album was made by awesome artists and producers from the company, but it contains all of my honest stories. How that came to be was through everyone who was curious about my stories, and listening to it attentively, so I am thankful. 10. In this EP, there’s a handwritten “Yves’ Love Letter”. What’s in that letter? I wrote it with honest feelings in a notebook at dawn, with piano music playing. As it was my first letter to a large group of unspecified people, word choice was difficult. But as a result, I was able to cleanly trim down the letter to only include my honest, but also plain affection. It’s like a letter that anyone can read and feel comforted by. 11. As a solo, how was the process of making your first album? I’m curious what sort of emotions you felt the most during this process. It’s like a saw-toothed wheel. As it rolls, the points poke and hurt, but that leaves a deep trail. It’s not an easy process for mind nor body, and I did feel uncertain and upset, but these are precious emotions to me that I can’t let go of. 12. What left an impression was the image of cycles in and with that, mentions of “lotus flower”, “calmness”, and “tranquility”. Was there any sort of special inner transformation? I needed something to ease my mind during my inactive period. I was so unstable at the time. While at the temple, I saw a pretty lotus flower blooming and ran over to look, and after I got close and looked below it, there was mud. At that moment I think I gained the strength to stand again like a lotus flower blooming atop the mud. 13. I don’t think it would’ve felt all that easy to break away from the rules of the past on a journey solely on your own. It wasn’t, but that’s why it was more fun. I don’t like typical, stereotypical rules. Ever since I was young, I was a bit of a rebel inside, like the green frog, then CEO Millic even called me a green frog. I tend to choose the harder path to go down, but I don’t dislike myself for doing that. [T/N: the character of the green frog comes from Korean folklore] 14. And with that, four tracks were completed. Which song do you think best captures Yves? . The feeling of wanting to go back but also not wanting to go back, I think CEO Millic captured these feelings of mine that even I don’t quite grasp. 15. Lil Cherry joins you as a feature in your title track; you met her for the first time while working on this, right? Did you have good chemistry? It was my first time working with unnie and I got to know her through this opportunity. After just hearing the rap in the guide version, comparing that to the song filled with her rapping, I remember feeling happy, thinking “this is it”. Unnie said let’s get something to eat next week. 16. Not long ago, a documentary clip was posted on the PAIX PER MIL Youtube channel, which included you expressing your feelings about hard times, and making up your mind to get past that. What’s something that keeps you going during hard times? The fans. Even if it’s a really predictable answer, there’s nothing but the fans. Even if it’s because I started music because I liked it, if you told me there was just one fan of mine in the world, I would sing for that fan. Since it’s a promise. And I want to do that. I won’t ever be able to repay all the love I’ve received, but I would like to. 17. Do you remember when or where you first wanted to become a musician? I don’t remember the exact details but when I was young, my older sister and I would watch TV and see cool singers singing R&B, and I remember how one time I imitated them while holding the remote. It was so fun that I sang until my mom came back home from work at night, and the next day my mom said she heard on the elevator “that her daughter was a good singer”. 18. You must want to try many things moving forward. Please let us know what first comes to mind. There’s so many things but what comes to mind now is a concert. Isn’t it so cool, being able to stand onstage for a concert with a setlist of just my own songs? I think I’ll need to work hard. 19. I’d like to hear your dreams as a musician. At the company terrace I talked with producer and artist Ioah, who’s a same-aged friend. More so than hoping for success, I really want to make music. We spent time talking about various genres of music, like “let’s try all of this sometime.” Whereas some people become bitter as they get older, I look forward to later expressing myself in a more mature and skillful way through music. I thank Ioah for getting me to have these thoughts. 20. What side of Yves do you think we’ll meet next time? I’m still not entirely sure, but like a lotus flower that has become a little more deeply rooted, an Yves that is elegant and confident, but also humble. Flower Rhythm The second pre-release track ‘Flower Rhythm’ is based on Heejin’s solo album’s title track ‘Algorithm’ and ‘Kehwa’. Borrowing from the rhythms of intro song ‘Kehwa’, which means the blooming of a flower, an ‘Algorithm’, this song was completed as a hybrid dance track. Within the fast-paced rhythm, listeners will be able to enjoy the ARTMS members’ refreshing voices. Candy Crush The third pre-release track ‘Candy Crush’ is based on Haseul’s Single ‘Plastic Candy’. Distress ‘Distress’ came in a hard-fought second place in the ARTMS pre-release Gravity, but it was such a highly polished song that it was the first song recorded during album preparations. The moment monitoring began in the first recording session, this song became the rulebook for ARTMS’ style. Butterfly Effect ‘Butterfly Effect’ contains the story of how the fluttering of the wings of LOONA’s ‘Butterfly’ became ARTMS. Inheriting the musical style of LOONA, so unique that one could call the genre itself ‘Butterfly’, as well as the legacy of its music, the song adds wings and flies over as something belonging to ARTMS. Birth The final song ‘Birth’ won the overwhelming support of the fans and placed first in the pre-release Gravity for ARTMS. And this ‘birth’ in question evidences the existence of ARTMS. After working every day on the album, I’ve recently finished recording and am now focusing on practicing the choreography. Days pass quickly when I’m busily going through lessons and practice. With good charting performance on Billboard, LOONA established itself as a global girl group. Was there any pressure regarding that as you come out as a solo act? It would be a lie to say there was no pressure. But as this is a new start, I think that if I keep a long-term view and slowly find my own colors, I think I may be able to find good results someday. Who is supporting you the most on your solo path? The LOONA members, of course. The members are completely on my side and tell me that things will surely go well for me. Manager-nim and everyone at the company are putting in all the hard work alongside me, on- and off-location, and they tell me that “in the end things will go well for you”, giving me energy whenever I get exhausted. I’m thankful for these people. What was the reason for choosing PAIX PER MIL as your agency for your solo activities? I wanted to undergo a metamorphosis. Until now my priority was for the team to do well, more so than myself, and there were many days when I pondered deeply about what I could do for the betterment of the group. Through those circumstances I was able to grow a lot, and now, I am in the process of getting to know myself more as a person. I also had thoughts about wanting to show my full self to fans. I’m grateful for my members and fans who’ve believed in these thoughts and have supported me. Please introduce your upcoming album. Millic CEO-nim took on the executive production on this album , and Ioah and Blah each gifted me one song each. I’m so grateful that every artist under the company supported my solo debut and lent their strengths to this album. This album is also my first step towards creating my own world as a solo artist. For a long time I’ve been fitting myself into a team, to a certain set of rules and systems. So to me, this album is a first attempt at escaping the loop of a predetermined set of rules, and studying myself and expressing myself through music. That’s why this EP is clumsy yet bold, rough yet honest. It also contains my gratitude to the fans who trusted and waited for me. Were there any memorable episodes, or any memories of hardship or joy while preparing your first EP? Honestly no moment was easy. But that made me even more determined, so after I did it, it felt vastly more fun and I felt much more proud. I tend to be very harsh on myself, so I remember bawling while recording “Goldfish”, a song that Blah wrote, because the recording wasn’t going as I had thought it would. You’re broadening your musical spectrum as an artist, going beyond being an idol. Are there any differences in mentality or in life, compared to when you were in a group? I’ve become more strict and careful towards myself so that I don’t ruin the reputation that the group known as LOONA has built up. Though I’m going solo, I always think that I’m always connected to the members, so I try to do my best at every given moment. But sometimes it gets lonely during lessons or practice because there’s no one to play around with. I think I’ll feel the empty spot where the members used to be more once activities begin. What is the most Yves-like thing? Doing what I want to do, never looking back and pushing forwards once I think something is the right thing to do, ultimately pulling through. At what moments do you think you made the right choice becoming an artist, doing music? When fans affirm that I can be of consolation and bring happiness, I think I made the right choice doing music. Your love for your fans seems extraordinary. Is there anything you want to tell your fans? I’ve never thought that it was extraordinary. It just seems like such a natural emotion. They’ve been by my side for a long time, and have given me so much love that I wonder if I could ever repay it, so I always feel grateful and apologetic. I will be sure to return the favor. We’ve heard that you want to pursue variety shows too. We’re curious about your future plans. I’ve thought that I wasn’t a good match for variety, but my members have often said that I’m really funny and that they wish that I would go on variety shows. If the opportunity comes, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about wanting to try going on a variety show to show a new side of myself.
