[Exclusive] LOONA Vivi & Hyunjin sign exclusive contracts with new agency CTD E&M Vivi and Hyunjin from LOONA have found a new agency. According to multiple music industry officials on the 11th, Vivi and Hyunjin, who recently won injunctions to terminate their contracts with former agency Blockberry Creative, have signed exclusive contracts with CTD E&M. Previously, all members of Loona had filed for injunctions to suspend the effect of their exclusive contracts, finding issue with unfair contracting by Blockberry Creative. The court awarded injunctions to Heejin, Kim Lip, Jinsoul, Choerry, Vivi, and Hyunjin. But Haseul, Yeojin, Yves, Go Won, and Olivia Hye, who had their contract provisions partially changed, lost their cases. Heejin, Kim Lip, Jinsoul, and Choerry, who won their cases, later joined Modhaus, a company established by CEO Jeong Byeong-gi who participated in producing for LOONA. At the time, Modhaus stated: “Modhaus wishes them all the best of luck on their new beginnings, and we promise to give them our full support so that they can create more cherished memories with their fans.” Vivi and Hyunjin, who received their court decisions later than the other four members, decided to embark on a new beginning with CTD E&M after deep deliberation. “Non-existence of contract with former agency” - Chuu’s lawsuit to conclude on August 17 The exclusive contract lawsuit for Chuu from the girl group LOONA is expected to conclude this August. The Seoul Northern District Court’s 12th Civil Cases Division (Da) held its fourth hearing on the 1st, for the civil suit filed by Chuu against Blockberry to determine the non-existence of exclusive contract effect. Chuu filed a lawsuit against Blockberry in December 2021 in order to confirm the non-existence of her exclusive contract. The lawsuit had gone through three hearings, and was even sent to mediation, but mediation failed and the main suit continued. Regarding this case and the filing for injunction to suspend entertainment activities, she received a partial winning ruling in March 2022. On this day, the court gave notice of the change of the presiding judge, and asked again about the positions of the two sides, and reviewed the prepared documents that were submitted. Chuu’s legal representative said, “We have submitted documents related to the recent provisional injunction, and its results. The intent is that the exclusive contract is invalid.” Blockberry’s legal representative has not further expressed their position since then. After the arguments were made, the court announced that the verdict would be made on August 17. Feverse, Girls Forever Five girl characters selected as the final members on Girl's Re:verse are debuting as Feverse. As actual girl group members shrouded behind a veil are reborn into these girls and debut anew, they straddle the virtual and the real and throw us into a joyful confusion. A groundlessly bright and steadily honest interview with these girls, who have achieved all the wacky imaginations they wanted in a virtual world. Q. Congratulations on becoming the final members of virtual idol survival Girl's Re:verse. For people who still may not be familiar with virtual idols, and with the five members, please introduce yourselves. Muneo: Feverse is a girl group comprised of the five final members of virtual idol survival Girl’s Re:verse. Our core selves are called “GirlX” and that’s the actual idol out there, and we participated in the show as “GirlV”, which are characters that we helped come up with lore and designs for. Muneo is from deep under the ocean and was one year old when I participated in the audition, and now I’m two, since we’re in the new year. Octopuses live for three years so I really had to debut, and I’m glad I got to achieve my dreams like this. Seoritae: I used to promote with rookie girl group Five Grain Girls as its maknae Seoritae, but then came the season when pests infest grain, so I tried out for Girl’s Re:verse. This is my second debut but I’m still a rookie. I’ve been learning a lot from the sunbaenims. Keuang: I’m Keuang, the boss red panda of Red Panda Village. I want to make a lot of money so I can build a chestnut bread factory for the red pandas back home. Rien: I’m from a planet called Gliese-832C. I used to sing by myself and then I joined Girl’s Re:verse, and thanks to that I made lots of good friends. I’m glad that I’m getting to sing for many people. Kim Serena: I’m from Jeongseon, Gangwon-do. I had a lot of interest in the stock market and investing, but I got burned really bad by my current agency (Kakao) and figured I needed to debut myself to regain the losses. I ended up selling off the stock and eating the loss, but I did succeed in debuting. Q. You’re debuting with the name Feverse, rather than the name of the survival show. How did you end up with this name, and what does it mean? Rien: Feverse is a combination of “Fever” as in passion, “Ever” as in everlasting, and “Universe” as in a world with limitless possibility. So it means a world of girls who possess endless, everlasting passion, and the infinite possibilities of girls who have escaped the limits of reality and become free. I think it’s a name that nicely represents both the identity of Girl’s Re:verse and the message we have. Q. Girl’s Re:verse, released previously, was a program where 30 K-pop girl group members meet in a virtual world and compete against each other, having crafted the world and identities of their virtual characters. Is there anything that you realized newly while appearing on and experiencing this program, or felt refreshed about because it felt different from other activities? Keuang: Promoting as the virtual GirlV felt like living a second life. I was able to say and do things that would be too offensive for a GirlX idol in real life. On the first day everyone came in with hair and makeup done, but as filming progressed, everyone started gathering in bare faces and comfy clothes. It let me focus on dancing and singing in a relaxed appearance, and go beyond the character to show how I really am. Kim Serena: Girl’s Re:verse involved all-day-long filming while wearing VR equipment. The staff were serious about this show, so meetings between GirlXs were minimized so that we could focus on being in character. We covered our faces carefully when coming in, and we had to follow a set path to go to the restroom. So it was tiring, but ultimately I was able to immerse myself fully into the character. When the eliminated girls vanished, it felt so sad even though it was just the virtual character going away. Q. What’s refreshing is that [the show] emphasized how the members don’t just exist as virtual characters, but that actual K-pop girl group members exist on the other side. As unrevealed members, what did you focus on in order to distinguish your characters from your actual selves? Seoritae: Rather than distinguishing mine, I was intending to do things freely that I couldn’t do in reality. But I think in the end it just ended up being similar to my real self. I was wishing I’d be a character that isn’t too difficult to approach from the other girls’ perspective, and I was grateful that they all treated me in a relaxed way. Q. What does title track “Cho” mean? Muneo: “Cho” expresses that feeling of being anxious while thinking about someone you have a crush on, and the key point is the lyrics that compress those feelings of affection into the word “cho” in amusing ways. Cho-ginjang [super nervous], cho-johan [anxious], cho-yeoreum [early summer], cho-yeonhan [stoic], cho-wallhagireul [hope to transcend]... It might sound like playing on words, but if you read carefully, it also represents the feelings we want to impart to SeeVerse, the fans who have supported and cheered for us since Girl’s Re:verse, on the brink of debut. Q. The melody rising in tension as the song progresses, and the distinctive and fast rock-based beat, fits very well with the coolness of early summer weather. Are there any emotional notes that the members tried to capture while recording and working on this song, or anything you took special care about? Rien: The song was coming out in early summer and it was our debut track, so I wanted the zestiness and coolness to stand out. I especially tried to accentuate cute pronunciations like “cho” and “ping”. Keuang: I had a hard time in recording because the notes were so high, to the point that we made a “Cho” high note challenge. I hope everyone reading this interview will try it too! Q. Rather than your identities in your respective groups, it seems that the chemistry between the newly joined members would be more important. Was there any unexpected synergy that you felt when you came together to work on music? Muneo: The Feverse members have good chemistry so I think we enjoyed recording the new song! Seoritae: When we worked on songs, because we have varying ranges, I got the sense that “Oh this part is mine” as soon as I heard it. Every time I realize how precious it is to have members who handle the high notes. Q. The album contains three songs in addition to the title track, including “I Promise (Feverse Ver.)” which was the main theme of Girl’s Re:verse. It’s a new Feverse version that’s made it onto the album. What’s changed? Kim Serena: First of all, the fact that we each have more lines? (Laughs) So recording also took longer than the Girl’s Re:verse version. I think you’ll be able to see the unique characteristics of each member better, with the increased lines. I hope you’ll pay attention to whose part is whose as you listen. Q. Given that you’re virtual idols, the opportunity to meet with fans is going to be limited to the digital arena. What kind of promotions do you have planned, and how will you encounter fans? Rien: We can’t reveal it yet, but what we do have planned now are radio appearances and video call fansigns with people who have membership. In terms of choreography or performance, what would be the best way to enjoy Feverse? Could you recommend the right way to view the performance? Kim Serena: If you watch the music video, a lot of scenes are only possible because it’s virtual. Members who climb stairs in different directions within the same frame, or the free-flowing camera work, I think those would be things to watch for. The scene where we dance in high heels on a circular planet with the space background is too dangerous in reality, so you should be careful to not try that. Q. Given the identities(?) of the members who shift between virtual and real worlds, the fans are surely feeling a different kind of entertainment alongside some confusion. Rien: ‘Feverse’ is our group name, that means a world of girls who keep an everlasting passion, and the infinite possibilities of girls who have escaped the limits of reality and become free! We’re a virtual girl group which promotes as ‘Girls V’, the characters whose concept, personality, and appearance were produced by current idol members, ‘Girls X’. 2. It’s a lineup that seems hard to get together because the Girls X are each working hard in her own group or solo, but it’s even more unique that it’s virtual! What are the differences between a real girl group and a virtual girl group, which you felt while preparing for the album? Keuang: Not having to put on makeup? (Laughs) Of course, it’s nice to show our shining selves on stage as Girls X, but many times while filming Girl’s Re:Verse and preparing for this album, I thought, “Ah, so it’s possible to work while being this free.” So, I think I can show a more comfortable side of Keuang in Feverse. (Fudge!) Rien: That’s right! I think we were rather able to talk more comfortably among ourselves. Maybe because my face is covered, I feel more honest and brave? The emotions that we, Feverse, felt while preparing for our virtual idol debut are baked into the lyrics, so please listen to the lyrics well! The moment I sang, I was touched by the vibration I felt in my vocal cords. Thanks to that, I made my own tracklist and sang for almost five hours. Q. Five hours, was that not tiring? A. I’ll say. But these days, for some reason, I have been thinking about the end. When I have the thought - what if a moment comes when I cannot sing anymore, and I have to put all this down? It makes me sad. I think singing is the most important thing in my life. Q. I wonder why you started thinking about the end? A. Maybe my vocal condition might deteriorate, or, even though I cannot imagine it right now, maybe a moment will come when I do not want to sing anymore. When I have those thoughts, it always concludes with the thought that I want to give my all into singing in each moment. Q. Did the image of always-bright-and-energetic Chuu ever feel burdensome? A. Sometimes I feel burdened when someone asks me to just be even brighter, no matter what. It means forcing something on top of the emotions I’m feeling, so to be honest, that is hard. But these days, I feel like I have overcome that. Like I have learned how to enjoy even that. As I have been a panelist on the variety show , I have felt that too. This was my first exposure to the trot genre. If someone demanded that I force myself to like trot, I would have felt averse to that, but listening to it and enjoying it live on set, I have learned that it is a charming genre. These days, I seek it out to listen to. Q. Chuu is so open to everything. I can feel that you want to learn and experience everything. A. Right. It’s that I did not know before, not that I did not like it. Q. How did you ring in this year? It’s the Year of the Rabbit, Chuu’s sign, and it also marked the start of solo activities. A. I made a mistake on the stage because of some mic issues, and I was so angry at myself. But the moment I saw my fans, the negative feelings disappeared like they were never there. To overcome what you yourself thought of as a limitation, you ran a lengthy course without stopping. After finishing the course, you cried while saying you were happy, and I could feel that emotion viscerally. A. It is such a truly happy memory to me too, when I met good people and we exchanged good influence with each other. That was also a time when I could not freely go outside, other than 30 minutes to go to the convenience store. So going running somewhere was something I could not even imagine. I think I was just overcome at the thought that I was running freely in a place I had never been to before. I even forgot that it was for a show, and the tears came. I felt an overwhelming emotion like I had become the main character of a movie, running in search of happiness. Q. Have you been running consistently ever since? A. Yes, just the other day I ran for about an hour at Banpo Bridge. Even if I do not get to go often, when I have a moment, I go running at a nearby park or Banpo Bridge or Seokchon Lake. Q. There are rumors of you being a ‘dakku’ (diary decorating) master. A. I have my own diary safe, which is full of diaries in which I have written down my daily routine and how I felt each day, since 2017. I started keeping a diary because I thought it would be a shame if my daily memories fade over time. Recently, I took out my diary from when I debuted, and it felt new, realising that I was feeling this way at that time. If I had not recorded it then, these would have become moments that I certainly would not remember now. Q. Do you have any unique ways of keeping a diary? A. There will be stories that I write as Kim Jiwoo. It has become my routine to end my day by writing my diary before going to bed. Rather than consciously separating Chuu and Kim Jiwoo, what I write depends on how I feel that day. On days when Chuu writes my diary, I put on colourful stickers and write in a bright tone, while on days when it’s Kim Jiwoo, I write in a plainer way, about what happened today, how I felt, and what I should do in the future. Q. What is currently on Chuu’s bucket list? A. I recently got my driver’s license. I want to train hard and go on a drive on my own. I also want to travel somewhere far away. I will also write down “wine lessons” [on my bucket list]. Q. Okay. In the distant future, looking back on your diary from today, what kind of Chuu do you hope to become? A. [Exclusive] Chuu vs Blockberry Contract Lawsuit Referred to Mediation.. Will the Obstacles to Her Entertainment Activities Disappear? While the conflict between Chuu, who has been removed from girl group LOONA, and agency Blockberry Creative (Blockberry hereafter) is entering a new phase with Blockberry’s petition [T/N: to block Chuu’s activities], the court decided to refer the case to mediation, in the first trial of the two parties’ primary lawsuit around the exclusive contract. According to Star News’ investigation, the Seoul Northern District Court’s 12th Civil Cases Division (Da [C]) was scheduled on the 16th to hold its next hearing for arguments in the civil suit filed by Chuu against Blockberry to determine the non-existence of exclusive contract effect, but the date was changed. The court’s reason for the change of date was the decision to refer [the case] to mediation. Mediation is a procedure for resolving a lawsuit, through mutual understanding between the parties. It is a process of reaching a mutual agreement between the two sides on the mediation date. The mediation date is set for the 27th. Or showing off my talent in front of people who like me for all I am. Dancing and singing. And the real things about myself! Thinking about various things, I doze off- And suddenly an incredible light wakes me up. I open my eyes to find myself as a girl with long arms and legs, and a voice that I'd wanted. Looking like this, maybe I can achieve what I've wanted? With excitement I turn my gaze over to the light. The flickering light stand that I thought was broken has become some kind of hole, shimmering with a blue glow. A space I'd never seen before, completely different from this cozy and splendid place that the owner decorated. Oddly, I feel no fear. Because somehow, I feel certain that on the other side, someone who's like me must be waiting for me. And as if to respond to my assurance, a song finds its way from the other side of the hole.
